Greatest Akokites!
They say a golden fish has no hiding place. Indeed, so it is with the University of Lagos Alumni Association.
It is no longer news that a high powered delegation led by the National President World wide Dr. John Momoh, OON, NPOM, was at the Office of the Vice President of Nigeria Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, a Distinguished Akokite, on a courtesy visit.
In his speech, the President who expressed appreciation for the time granted the delegation, commended the sterling qualities of The Vice President and his efforts in ensuring a greater Nigeria is birthed despite the challenges.
He thanked him again for honouring the Association’s invitation to the 50th anniversary of the association, while never turning down requests for audience each time we needed him even after that.
The President reminded the Vice President of the proposed 500 bed hostel and asked for his personal commitment to the building by helping to get a wing of it done.
He also informed the Vice President of the planned TV series of the association which will be an interview of various distinguished members who will discuss on topical national and international issues that will bring development to the nation.
Dr. Momoh also requested that the Abuja branch of the Association will be eagerly waiting for the Vice President’s participation in order to boost membership and growth.
In his response the Vice President thanked the National President while reiterating that we will always be welcome, and as his Alma mater Unilag can never be brushed aside by him.
He called for more inclusive education in the institutions while calling on stakeholders to own up to the responsibility at this time and in generations to come by making some real progress that will redefine the university.
He added that higher institutions become globally recognized because of their active engagements in research.
He called on University of Lagos to further focus on how to endow research because according to him “ultimately, research is what puts us on the world map of intellectual achievement and attainment.”
He made the call for more resources to be devoted to research, adding that universities like UNILAG, “ought to be at the frontline of scholarships and intellectual achievements”.
The delegation included, Dr. Fassy Yusuf National Vice President 1,Mr Bala Abdul Vice President 2, National Secretary, Chief Bisi Ogundipe, National Legal adviser, Olajide Olakanmi (PANAF), National Treasurer, Mr. Harris Alade and National Publicity Secretary, Mrs. Regina Chris-Ogbodo.
Others are Rivers Branch Chairman Chief (Dr.) Bob-Manuel, Abuja Chairman, Mr. Aliu Akosile, Anambra Chairman, Mr. Onyeagba, Chairman Enugu State Branch, Mr. Walter Igbasi, Chairman Warri Branch, Mr. Babalola Falobi and Barr. Emmanuel Diei of the Asaba chapter.
Executive Secretary, Mrs. Yetunde Abatan was also in the delegation as well as Mr Seun Badejo, the Alumni Relations Manager.
