In fulfillment of its branch’s promise, Chairman, University of Lagos Alumni Association, United Kingdom Branch (UA-UK), Mr. Yinka Afini-Jegede today led a delegation of the Branch to present the 1.2million naira cheque for the Bursary/ Scholarship Award Fund to the Vice Chancellor, Professor Oluwatoyin Ogundipe, FAS.
The delegation was received by the Dean, Student Affairs, Dr. Musa Obalola who introduced the team to the VC also disclosed their mission, further explaining that the Bursary/Scholarship fund was meant for 12 (twelve) outstanding students across faculties of the University of Lagos who were on CGPA of 4.50 – 5.00 (First Class).
In his speech, the Vice Chancellor hailed the gesture of the branch adding that it was in line with the P3P Initiative (Pick a Project, Pick a Programme, Pick a Student) of his administration and this particular donation conforms to the Pick A Student subsidiary. He commended the UK Branch and urged other branches of the Alumni to take a leaf from them and support the University.
Responding, Mr. Jegede, who served as Public Relations Officer, UNILAG Students’ Union during his undergraduate programme thanked the Vice Chancellor for his warm reception and noted that University of Lagos was at the core of his heart as all his achievements from his time in Nigeria to his relocation to the UK were owed to UNILAG for which he will ever be grateful. He added that the giving back to University of Lagos was also a cause that all the members of the Alumni UK branch are passionate about adding that the Chairman of Bursary/Scholarship Committee, Dr. Babatunde Anifowose, a Professor at Coventry University, was particularly interested in the project as he was an indigent student during his days in UNILAG and always looked out for opportunities to assist students who might be in the same dilemma.
While presenting the cheque, Mr. Jegede noted that the amount was small, stating that ‘if he had the world’, if would give it all to UNILAG. He however added that the branch is committed to making the Bursary/Scholarship scheme a culture which will continue annually or biennially.
It worthy of note that the UK Branch intimated the national body, particularly the National President, Worldwide, Dr John Momoh OON, NPOM of this project. As such, Mr. Taiwo Akinfolarin, National Ex-officio member and Mr. Seun Badejo, Alumni Relations Manager were also present to represent the National Executive Committee (NEC).
